SSD form factors today

Dennis Martin, president of Demartek, discusses the variety of SSD form factors available today in this Expert Response.

What SSD form factors are available today?

SSDs come in a variety of form factors. The four primary SSD form factors are: disk drive form factor, PCIe card, memory slot, and USB drive form factor. Within each of these SSD form factors, there are some variations. For example, the drive form factor allows for different interfaces such as SATA and SAS, and for 3.5-inch, 2.5-inch, and 1.8-inch drives. The PCIe form factor can appear in half-height, short cards or full-height, full-length cards. Memory form factor SSDs are available in regular DIMM slot format and the smaller SO-DIMM format.
