#19: Assume nothing

1. High availability is not automatic

2. Open system vendors do not give you this stuff

3. Planning, effort, and expense are required to achieve production quality availability

4. Unless you pay extra:
  • Disks are not mirrored (or RAID-5)
  • Systems do not failover

  • Data is not backed up
  • Systems do not scale
