Western Digital names new COO

Western Digital Corp., Lake Forest, Calif., has appointed Arif Shakeel chief operating officer, reporting to president and chief executive officer Matt Massengill. Shakeel, 46, formerly executive vice president and general manager of the Company's Hard Drive Solutions (HDS) group, retains day-to-day responsibility for the HDS group and adds operating responsibility for new storage initiatives in the gaming device, set-top box and other sectors. In his expanded role, Shakeel will also provide directional guidance to Western Digital's new venture activities. Under Shakeel's leadership, since October 1999, the Company's core hard drive business returned to profitability in the December 2000 quarter.

Start-up appoints first CFO

BlueArc Corp., a network-attached storage (NAS) provider headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., announced that Charles E. Noreen has joined the company as the company's first chief financial officer. As CFO, Noreen will spearhead BlueArc's financial team, reporting directly to the CEO of BlueArc, Enrico Pesatori. Noreen brings 18 years of finance and senior management experience to BlueArc. Prior to joining BlueARC he was senior vice president of Finance and Administration and CFO of CyberSource Corp. where he was responsible for its June 1999 initial public offering and their November 1999 secondary offering.

Pirus strengthens management team

Pirus Networks, a storage networking company headquartered in Acton, Mass., announced a pair of new appointments that the company said would aid in moving forward as it begins to accelerate its product delivery, partnerships and distribution. John F. Gavin has joined the company as chief financial officer and treasurer. He will direct the Company's financial strategy and planning, business development, information systems, human resource functions and general administration. Pirus has also promoted Stephen Cleary from director to vice president of Operations. In this role, Cleary will be responsible for all aspects of manufacturing including the supply chain strategy and customer support operations. Cleary previously was the director of Manufacturing at Picturetel Corp., where he was responsible for supply chain management, new product introductions and global product distribution. Both Gavin and Cleary will report directly to Rich Napolitano, Pirus CEO.

Entrada Networks expands technology team

Entrada Networks Inc., San Diego, Calif., has added two networking veterans to its ranks. The SAN transport company announced Sharam Hakimi has joined Entrada as vice president of Hardware Systems Development and Nagaraj (Raj) Ganti as vice president of Product Management, both newly formed positions. Hakimi and Ganti will lead the design and expansion of Entrada's multi-service access, protocol-neutral switching products that extend and connect isolated SAN islands over metro area (MAN) and wide area (WAN) networks. Hakimi comes to Entrada from Lucent Technologies, where he was the director of Advanced Switching/Communications Processors. In this capacity, he defined the roadmap for a family of Ethernet multi-layer switches on chip standard products, as well as the interface for high-bandwidth embedded memory strategies for multi-terabit switching requirements. Ganti joined Entrada from Qualcomm Inc., where he managed the Advanced Technology and Development Group and was Lead Architect responsible for developing design and implementation technologies, including high-speed networks using ATM/Gigabit Ethernet.

Former Brocade CEO elected to DataCore's board

Storage virtualization and networking software specialist DataCore Software, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., appointed Bruce Bergman, former president and CEO of Brocade Communications Systems, to its board of directors. According to DataCore, Bergman is joining its board to help plan and execute strategies for expanding the company's continued growth in the fast-growing storage virtualization and networking marketplace. Bergman has more than 15 years of CEO-level leadership experience with companies including Brocade Communications Systems, Inc., Xylogics, ATG Cygnet, Inc and Proteon, Inc. At Brocade, Bergman brought the initial products to market and grew the company's revenue to $25 million. He also developed the company's long-range strategic plan.
