Hewlett-Packard (HP) today launched a sub-$20,000 entry-level all-flash array as part of an upgrade to its 3PAR StoreServ midrange storage area network (SAN) platform.
The HP 3PAR StoreServ 8000 series includes four models, replacing the 7000 series that has been on the market since 2012. HP today also added two new models to the 3PAR StoreServ 20000 enterprise SAN family, which it launched in June.
The new systems are the all-flash 8450, as well as the 8200, 8400 and 8440 models that can hold any combination of solid-state drives (SSDs) and SAS hard disk drives. The entry-level 8200 price starts at $19,479 for a dual-controller system, with six 480 GB of eMLC SSDs. The 8200 scales to 750 TB of raw capacity.
The entry-level street price for HP's all-flash 8200 comes in under Dell's price of $25,000 for its SC4020 with the same amount of MLC flash capacity.
The all-flash 8450 is a four-controller system that starts with six 480 GB SSDs and can scale to 1.85 PB of raw flash capacity.
The 8400 and 8440 are also four-controller systems. The 8400 scales to 2.4 PB of raw capacity and the 8440 can hold 3 PB of raw storage.
HP claims the 8000 series can achieve more than 1 million IOPS at 0.387 millisecond latency and double the bandwidth of the 7000 series.
The 8000 arrays use Intel Ivy Bridge processors, replacing the older Sandy Bridge processors in the 7000 series. The 8200 and 8400 have six CPU cores, and the 8440 and 8450 have 10 cores.
Vish Mulchand, HP's product line manager for HP 3PAR, said the vendor has not set a date for removing the 7000 series from the price list.
"As the products transition, we'll decide when the 7000 will actively go away," he said. "I think as customers look to transform their environment into the digital economy, they are looking to get more insight into their data and more access to their applications. That is what they are grappling with and we are providing the capability to do this."
The two new 20000 series arrays are 20450 all-flash systems and the 20800 all-flash starter kit. The 20800 flash starter kit includes two 20800 controller nodes, two drive enclosures and eight 480 GB cMLC SSDs, with pricing starting at $99,995. The 20450 scales to 6 PB of flash capacity.
Customers can mix and match 3PAR arrays, moving and replicating data between the midrange 8000 and enterprise-level 20000 series via the HP Peer Motion software introduced in 2014.
Russ Fellows, senior partner and analyst at Evaluator Group Inc., based in Boulder, Colo., said HP's sub-$20,000 entry-point pricing is the most compelling part of this announcement.

"The pricing is almost eye-popping," he said. "Most [all-flash] prices are closer to $100,000. HP really is driving down the price. The idea that all-flash arrays are too expensive is not true anymore."
HP also enhanced 3PAR software to help reduce latency to 0.5 milliseconds for flash. HP 3PAR Priority Optimization Software allows customers to create and modify minimum performance goals and threshold limits, including I/O per second, bandwidth and latency requirements.
"The software now has the ability to do half-a-millisecond latency controls or 500 millisecond controls," Mulchand said. "The Priority Optimization software lets you control how much performance [is] allotted to a particular application.
The 3PAR StoreServ's StoreOnce Recovery Manager Central for VMware (RMC-V) also has been upgraded with the ability for faster virtual machine protection. RMC-V takes application-consistent snapshots on the HP 3PAR StoreServ array and copies the changed blocks directly to any HP StoreOnce appliance. It also supports VMware vSphere 6.0 with VMware Virtual Volumes (VVOLs) and more granular recovery of individual VMs across all 8000 and 20000 arrays.
The new HP Smart SAN for HP 3PAR StoreServ now uses express provisioning technology to reduce the number of steps required to provision a SAN. The software automatically sets SAN fabric zoning for customers who are deploying flash with Fibre Channel. StoreServ also has been enhanced to reduce iSCSI latency and add support for iSCSI VLAN tagging.
