Kaminario expands its storage-as-a-service offerings

To expand its capabilities as a storage-as-a-service platform, Kaminario has added metered usage payments, disaster recovery and the ability to use services on the public cloud.

Kaminario has added storage utility, disaster recovery and public cloud capabilities to its storage-as-a-service platform, as well as a unified licensing framework.

Designed for business critical data, the new platforms offer alternatives for building application infrastructures with the control and performance of dedicated storage, according to Kaminario.

One of the new platforms is storage utility, which combines Kaminario's existing consumption-based software subscription model with pay-as-you-go hardware acquisition. Kaminario runs on hardware available as preintegrated building blocks from partner Tech Data.

With storage utility, the hardware expense is converted to a consumption-based monthly payment determined by actual storage consumed. Usage metering is tied directly to Kaminario's software usage with billing integrated into Kaminario Clarity's analytics platform.

The Kaminario storage utility platform is available through Tech Data's technology-as-a-service offering. Baseline pricing is $100 per usable terabyte, per month.

Kaminario also now offers disaster recovery as a service, which is a fully managed, cloud-based disaster recovery platform. It is a month-to-month expense based on protected capacity. Subscribers can choose from a list of tier 4 data center locations for their disaster recovery site, or use an existing remote site they already operate.

Data is replicated using either Kaminario's native replication function or a third-party platform if the primary site is non-Kaminario storage. Kaminario claims it can support a range of service levels and recovery time objectives.

The third new offering from Kaminario is its public cloud capabilities. According to Kaminario, it will offer the possibility to implement Kaminario storage instances on major public cloud platforms, including AWS, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure. This will still allow use of the full stack of data services available to on-premises resources.

Kaminario's native snapshot and replication tools can be used to move data from on-premises data centers to the cloud. Cloud instances will be managed within the same framework and software stack as on-premises implementations. Kaminario Clarity will be available to provide management and analytics tools across all environments, and Kaminario Flex will be available to provide orchestration and automation tools.

Lastly, Kaminario has launched a unified licensing framework that enables users to buy infrastructure under any combination of acquisition models. For example, a customer can purchase an enterprise-wide license for some amount of capacity and deploy storage resources on purchased hardware, utilities hardware, a disaster recovery site or in the public cloud.

Kaminario's utility storage and disaster recovery tools are now available, while Kaminario for public cloud will be available in 2020.
