Enterprise all-flash storage systems: 2014 Products of the Year finalists

Products eligible for this category include arrays built specifically for flash, legacy arrays re-architected for flash and solid-state drives.

All-flash systems have become a common sight in the storage landscape, and we have nine finalists in the enterprise all-flash storage systems category for the Storage magazine/ 2014 Products of the Year award. The finalists are mostly arrays built from the ground up for flash, with a couple of legacy arrays re-tooled for solid-state.

Products eligible for this category include arrays built specifically for flash, legacy arrays re-architected for flash and solid-state drives (SSDs).

EMC Corp. XtremIO

As EMC's first all-flash platform, XtremIO has a scale-out architecture (currently to six nodes) with data services that include thin provisioning, data deduplication, hardware-accelerated encryption, inline compression and writeable snapshots. The system scales IOPS, capacity, CPU and memory linearly across nodes.

Hewlett-Packard 3PAR StoreServ 7450

Hewlett-Packard (HP) upgraded the all-flash version of its 3PAR StoreServ platform, adding thin deduplication and zero-block deduplication to reduce usable capacity requirements. The vendor also added thin clones and support for commercial multi-level cell (MLC) SSDs, which it claims reduce the price of flash to $2 per usable GB with deduplication technologies.

IBM FlashSystem 840

The FlashSystem 840 is built for performance, using IBM's MicroLatency technology to decrease latency from its previous all-flash arrays. The vendor claims the 840 can perform 135 microsecond reads and 90 microsecond writes. It scales to 66 TB of enterprise MLC capacity.

Kaminario Inc. K2 v5

Version 5 of Kaminario's all-flash array added storage management features to what had been a pure performance platform. New features include inline deduplication and compression, thin provisioning and a high-capacity utilization RAID (K-RAID) scheme. Kaminario also extended the maximum usable capacity to 720 TB in a four-node cluster.

NetApp Inc. All-flash FAS8000

The all-flash FAS8000 is built on NetApp's Data Ontap storage operating system. It uses the same data management features as the vendor's flagship storage arrays, including deduplication, compression, thin provisioning and space-efficient snapshots. NetApp claims the all-flash FAS8000 can scale to more than 2 million IOPS at consistent sub-millisecond latency.

Pure Storage Inc. FlashArray 450

The FlashArray 450 is the highest capacity version of Pure's all-flash platform. The 2U controller system scales to 70 TB of raw capacity with expansion shelves. It runs on Purity 4.0 software, which includes FlashReduce inline data deduplication and compression and FlashRecover space-efficient snapshots and asynchronous replication.

Samsung SSD 845DC PRO

The 845DC PRO is Samsung's first SSD using vertical NAND technology, which includes 24 stacked vertical cells to improve write performance and endurance. Samsung claims a reinforced random write performance of up to 51,000 IOPS and a sequential write speed of up to 460 MBps. The SSDs come in 400 GB and 800 GB MLC capacities.

Tegile Systems IntelliFlash T3800

The IntelliFlash T3800 scales to 48 TB of MLC SSDs in one box, and to 336 TB with expansion shelves. It includes always-on data reduction technologies like deduplication and compression, along with thin provisioning, snapshots, remote replication and application-aware provisioning.

Violin Memory Inc. Concerto 7000 All Flash Array

The Concerto 7000 uses Violin's Flash Fabric Architecture for micro-second latency, which includes asynchronous replication between data centers and uses WAN-optimized deduplication, compression and encryption at the application and file system layers. The Concerto 7000 All Flash Array scales from 70 TB to 280 TB of flash storage in 18 rack units.
