WD, a Western Digital company, has redesigned its My Book and My Book for Mac external desktop drives to provide as much as 4 TB of storage capacity and what the company claims is enhanced data protection for large volumes of data, video, music and photos.
The new My Book lines are available with USB 3.0 in 2 TB, 3 TB and 4 TB capacities. The drives offer the following data protection features: WD SmartWare Pro and the WD Edition of Acronis True Image.
The WD SmartWare Pro offers automated backup with Dropbox integration, as well as hardware encryption and password protection. Acronis True Image enables users to run a full system backup for disaster recovery and securely delete digital files and programs.
My Book for Mac also incorporates SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and USB Attached SCSI connectivity for increased speed and flexibility. Available in 2 TB and 3 TB capacities, My Book for Mac is compatible with Apple Time Machine.
Rachel Dines, senior analyst at Cambridge, Mass.-based Forrester Research Inc., said that even though the product is aimed at consumers, "I wouldn't be surprised to see employees using this type of solution to protect their critical files on their work laptops."
Dines said that protecting critical files is a rising priority for employees, citing recent Forrester surveys that indicated 61% of information workers back up their most important files.
Because the My Book lines allow data to be sent to DropBox, they fit with another growing trend. Dines said 14% of companies are using the cloud for endpoint backups. Some employees are also using cloud services on their own dime, as Forrester surveys showed 9% use file sync/share tools and 5% use Backup as a Service systems.
My Book and My Book for Mac hard drives come with a three-year limited warranty and are available at www.wdstore.com, as well as select retailers and distributors. Manufacturer's suggested retail price is $129.99 for 2 TB, $149.99 for 3 TB and $179.99 for 4 TB.
