Dot Hill Systems announces cache data protection patent; Mushkin expands SSD lineup

Dot Hill Systems announces patented method to safeguard data and preserve cache in the event of power loss, while Mushkin expands its SSD line.

Dot Hill Systems Corp., the Longmont, Colorado-based SAN storage provider, has patented a method to safeguard data and preserve cache in the event of main power loss.

Cached write data and metadata stored in volatile memory must be preserved in the event of a power loss. When power loss occurs, valuable data is transferred from volatile memory to the non-volatile memory of the computer's memory system. This transfer of data is known as memory flush operation.

Dot Hill's patent also provides a method to reduce power usage in computer memory systems during volatile memory flush operations. This innovation reduces power required for a memory flush operation by selectively providing power to certain computer components at certain times, and not to others. By reducing this power requirement, a smaller power source, such as a supercapacitor, can be used by the computer memory system.

The patent is included in the Dot Hill AssuredSAN and AssuredSAN Pro storage arrays, which are equipped with a number of energy-saving features, including dot Hill's patented EcoStor ™ "green" battery-free alternative for cache memory, drive spin-down and data center power options.
