Dell boosts Foglight's virtual storage management support

Dell's Foglight for Storage Management includes support for more arrays and performance monitoring.

Dell Inc. updated its Foglight virtualization management platform this week, adding support for more SAN arrays and improved monitoring tools to Foglight for Storage Management.

Along with Foglight for Storage Management, Dell's Foglight platform includes Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise Edition and Foglight for Virtualization Standard Edition. Dell acquired the Foglight platform when it purchased Quest Software for $2.4 billion in June 2012. Dell changed the entire platform's name to Foglight in February.

New virtual storage management features include support for Dell's Compellent and EqualLogic storage arrays, and EMC Corp.'s VMAX storage system. Foglight for Storage Management also has improved performance monitoring, analysis tools and pool-level access for thin-provisioned environments.

The Foglight platform updates will be previewed at next week's VMworld conference in San Francisco. The software will be available for a free download for existing maintenance customers starting the week of Sept. 2.

In addition to the virtual storage management features, Dell added support for VMware Inc.'s vCloud Director virtual data center management product and VMware's Horizon View virtual desktop infrastructure tool.

Bernd Harzog, an analyst at Austin, Texas-based The Virtualization Practice, said that while the update doesn't include market-shifting technologies, it shows Dell is committed to investing in its virtualization products. "There aren't many examples of large systems management vendors that both get the new management requirements of the virtualization market and are investing heavily in meeting those requirements," he said.

Citing the need for more performance monitoring and remediation tools for larger environments, Dell added optimization features to help customers right-size their virtual environment to reclaim wasted resources. Version 7.0 lets virtualization managers monitor, report and remediate unused virtual machines that can get lost or forgotten due to VM sprawl.

"People tend to use templates and get a little sloppy," said John Maxwell, Dell Software's vice president of infrastructure management. "And what happens, for example, is that you're running eight VMs per server and your goal is 10, and to do that you're going to have to optimize the environment and make sure the settings are correct."

Maxwell said the typical Foglight platform customer has approximately 3,000 VMs, and some customers are watching close to 44,000 active VMs.

Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise Edition 7.0 is priced at $799 per physical socket. Foglight for Virtualization Standard Edition is $399 per socket, while the Foglight for Storage Management 3.0 tool is $499 per socket.
