Sonnet this week announced USB 3.0 compatibility of its xMac mini Server, and Apricorn last week released its Velocity Solo X2 SSD upgrade product.

Sonnet announces USB 3.0 compatibility for xMac mini Server

Sonnet says the xMac mini Server is designed to "transform a Mac mini into a full-fledged expandable rackmount server," when the computer is mounted inside a specially designed 1U rackmount enclosure containing two PCIe 2.0 slots that connect to the computer via its Thunderbolt port.

The company says the product is designed to be used as a back-office RAID server; a metadata controller; or mobile rack for audio, on-location video or other media projects.

The USB 3.0-compatible xMac mini Server is available now for $1,295. Sonnet will also offer existing xMac mini Server customers an upgrade with a replacement cable kit. The kit, which replaces the existing USB 2.0 cables, is priced at $39.95 and is expected to ship in mid-November.

Apricorn announces new Velocity Solo X2

Apricorn last week announced a new version of its Velocity Solo Desktop SSD Upgrade line, the Velocity Solo X2 card. The company says the Solo X2 offers data transfer speeds of up to 550 megabytes per second with a single solid-state drive (SSD) and up to 800 MBps with two drives.

The card, which uses a Marvell 9182 chipset, allows users to add an SSD to their desktop system. The Velocity Solo X2 also provides an additional Serial Advanced Technology Attachment or Serial ATA III data connection that can be used to connect to another SSD or hard disk drive to provide expanded high-speed storage.

The Velocity Solo X2 is available now for $99.
