IBM launches high-performance computing system; other storage news

IBM brings out HPC storage system based on hardware from OEM partner NetApp; Xiotech launches turnkey system for Citrix VDI storage; Dell adds QLogic converged adapters; more news.

IBM launched the DCS3700 high-performance computing (HPC) storage system with support for 60 drives and the ability to scale to 180 drives and 360 TB with expansion units.

The 4U DCS3700 is based on OEM partner NetApp’s E2600-60 hardware and customized by IBM to support its General Parallel File System (GPFS). The system includes dual-active controllers, 6 Gbps SAS ports, optional 8 Gbps Fibre Channel ports, and optional IBM FlashCopy, Volume Copy, Remote Mirroring over FC and DS Storage Manager software. Pricing starts at $41,990 for a DCS3700 and $19,900 per expansion unit.

Xiotech embraces Citrix VDI

Xiotech Corp. launched a turnkey virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) storage bundle consisting of its ISE-based storage systems and Citrix XenDesktop and XenServer. Xiotech and partner Pano Logic have created a thin client bundle for XenDesktop, and the storage vendor launched a MetaLUN for Citrix that lets organizations add ISE storage systems on the fly to add capacity and performance for Xen-based virtual machines.

Dell adds QLogic CNAs

Dell Inc. is selling QLogic Corp.’s 8200 Series 10 Gigabit Ethernet converged network adapters (CNAs) in its PowerEdge blade servers. The 8200 Series supports TCP/IP, Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), and iSCSI protocols.

Atempo, Dell extend archiving partnership

Atempo Digital Archive (ADA) has been certified for the Dell DX Object Storage Platform. ADA is integrated with the Dell DX Object Storage Platform’s API, which manages the total cost of ownership associated with the archival of data for long-term preservation. ADA frees storage space by migrating data to the DX Object Storage Platform, organizing it and making it easy to access with hierarchical storage management capabilities.

Quest Software, StorSimple team up on cloud storage

Backup software vendor Quest Software Inc. and cloud storage gateway startup StorSimple are partnering to deliver a VMware Ready certified cloud backup and disaster recovery product. The vendors have combined Quest vRanger and the StorSimple Hybrid Cloud Storage Appliance to allow vRanger customers to back up and restore VMware virtual machine using cloud services.

Enhance adds 3 TB drives

Enhance Technology Inc. is shipping 3 TB SATA drives in its EnhanceRAID departmental storage systems. The 3 TB drives are available in eight-drive E800 and four-drive E400 desktop storage systems.

City of Manassas manages email with C2C archiving software

The City of Manassas, Va., has implemented C2C’s ArchiveOne archiving software to minimize PST files, improve capacity of Exchange servers, and improve backup and restore times. ArchiveOne can discover an email based on more than 100 metadata characteristics and provide Web-enabled access to archived email from anywhere.

Optimus optimized files with StorNext

Optimus said it's using StorNext software to manage high-performance sharing of rich media files between multiple applications, including Autodesk Smoke and Flame, FilmLight Baselight, Quantel eQ, Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe After Effects and Avid Media Composer. The post-production house uses StorNext to manage more than 260 TB of data on six file systems running a combination of Windows, Linux or Mac operating systems. Optimus also leverages StorNext Distributed LAN Clients to bring Windows access over IP to the SAN.
