EMC beefs up Symmetrix Flash drives

EMC adds 200 GB and 400 GB solid-state drives to its Symmetrix enterprise systems; Double-Take adds Windows 2008 support; Carbonite launches online backup for Macs.

EMC Corp. is offering 200 GB and 400 GB Flash drives for its Symmetrix DMX-4 enterprise storage systems, and plans to add the larger solid-state drives (SSDs) to its Clariion midrange and Celerra unified systems later this year.

The new SSDs are larger versions of the STEC Inc. drives that EMC has sold with its Symmetrix systems since early 2008. The new drives also support a 4 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) interface, up from 2 Gbps for the first generation of Symmetrix SSD drives.

Double-Take clusters its Windows support

Double-Take Software Inc. has enhanced its replication and failover software suite, adding support for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V Server 2008 to Double-Take for Windows. Double-Take for Windows now includes a Virtual Recovery Assistant for Hyper-V, as well as support for clustered SQL servers and clustered file servers in Windows 2008.

IDC: Managing storage costs more than buying it

Framingham, Mass.-based consultancy IDC estimated the total annual cost to manage the world's installed base of external storage, including software, power, cooling, administration personnel and services, at approximately 60% of all enterprise storage-related spending. That means the cost of managing external storage exceeds the actual cost of acquiring it.

Carbonite adds online backup solution for Macs

Carbonite Inc. has launched Online Backup for Mac, which offers unlimited, automatic online backup for Intel Corp.-based Macs with OS 10.4 or 10.5. Online Backup finds new and changed files, and then backs them up whenever the computer is connected to the Internet. It encrypts the data before sending it to Carbonite's secure data centers.

NYSE accepts Quantum's listing plan

Quantum Corp. said the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has accepted its proposed business plan for continued listing. Quantum's stock will be listed as long as it passes quarterly reviews by the NYSE's Listing and Compliance Committee. With the recent suspension of its $1 minimum trading price, Quantum has until at least mid-August to regain compliance with the $1 listing standard.

Milliman Care Guidelines picks Xiotech Emprise 7000

Milliman Care Guidelines LLC, a national provider of clinical guidelines and software, has chosen Xiotech Corp.'s Emprise 7000 storage system to support its virtualization initiative. The system will be used with Xiotech's Web services-based ICON Manager and Virtual View to simplify storage monitoring, management and provisioning as Milliman Care Guidelines virtualizes its 40 physical servers.

StorageCraft discounts ShadowProtect IT edition

StorageCraft Technology Corp. is offering a 63% discount on its ShadowProtect IT edition. ShadowProtect IT's licensing program gives a technician unlimited use on Windows-based servers, desktops and laptops for disaster recovery, system migration and data protection of physical systems and virtual environments.
