Adaptec Inc. announced a new line of serial-attached SCSI (SAS) products, which include a new SAS host bus adapter; two Adaptec SAS RAID controllers, one for PCI-X and one for PCIe servers and a four-bay internal storage enclosure This line will also include data protection software, which according to Adaptec, allows users to distribute the hot spare disk space across the array in order to increase performance, and supports RAID-6.
Adaptec also announced two SAS subsystems, the Adaptec SANbloc 5000f RAID subsystem and SANbloc S50 JBOD. The 500f box, a 2U, 12-drive system, is a FibreChannel-to-SAS array that will support SAS in both direct-attached and networked storage environments, and can hold both SAS and SATA drives. The JBOD is meant to expand the back-end capacity of the RAID system, allowing for up to eight additional systems (total of 108 hard drives) for a capacity up to 54 terabytes (TB) (SATA) or 32.4 TB (SAS). The 5000f will be available before the end of the year at a manufactuer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $5,995 without drives. The Adaptec S50 will be available before the end of November at an MSRP of $2,995 without drives.
Finally, Adaptec has established several SAS support programs, including introductory SAS tutorials, certified technical training courses, an online SAS education center, storage advisor weblog, bundled SAS product evaluation, starter kits for resellers and end users, and the Adaptec Trusted SAS Compatibility Lab for multi-vendor testing of interoperability between Adaptec and third party SAS products.
