Storage Clips: Brocade offers FICON for IBM mainframe

Brocade announced that its SAN director will connect to IBM zSeries systems at 2 Gbps; Iron Mountain launched a new service for e-mail.

Brocade offers FICON for IBM mainframe
Brocade Communications Systems Inc. announced that its SAN director is now qualified for FICON connectivity at 2 Gbps to networked storage in IBM zSystem 9-109 and eServer zSeries environments. The SilkWorm 48000 is a 256-port SAN director that is designed to provide Fibre Channel/FICON intermix, FICON Control Unit Port and FICON cascading.

Brocade also announced a FICON SAN director customer, the IT service provider responsible for municipal services in Vienna, Austria, called Wien IT EDV Dienstleistungsgesellschaft mbH. The organization migrated existing ESCON channels to FICON connections.

Iron Mountain introduces e-mail service
Iron Mountain Inc. announced the availability of a new e-mail continuity service, delivered via a partnership with MessageOne. The standby e-mail system synchronizes e-mail immediately with the hosted data center. When a customer's primary e-mail system becomes incapacitated, the e-mail continuity service is activated via phone or Web console. The service sends notification of activation to company employees by pager or secondary e-mail address, and employees will be able to access their e-mail from any Web-based browser. Once the company's primary mail system has been restored, all e-mails that were sent or received during the emergency are automatically merged into the company's primary mail system. The service is compatible with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes and Novell Groupwise e-mail systems, as well as BlackBerry and other mobile devices.

Exabyte group promotes VXA packet format
Exabyte Corp. announced that it has teamed up with Imation Corp, Matsushita Electric Industrial Ltd. (Panasonic), Sony Electronics and TDK Electronics Corp. to form The VXA Alliance, a tape storage industry group focused on promoting the VXA Packet Tape format. Each of the five charter member companies in the new group has committed personnel and financial support to the new organization.

DataCore updates SANmelody
DataCore Software Corp. announced an update release to SANmelody 2.0, which includes new Volume Shadow Copy Services support for SQL Server, Exchange 2003 and Windows 2003 file systems for iSCSI IP SANs. Other new features include compatibility with NAS platforms, performance acceleration for disks served to NAS engines, emergency recovery and diskless boot support, support for Microsoft Clusters, VMware and Blade Servers.

U.K.'s Bunker launches service
U.K. managed services provider The Bunker Secure Hosting Ltd. announced the launch of a new online backup service. The service, a "pay as you go" program, will store data at a Tier-4 data center in the greater London area.

Broadcom demonstrates SAS/SATA RAID
Broadcom Corp. will be demonstrating a serial-attached SCSI (SAS)/SATA RAID controller with a PCI Express bus running on a Linux server at the U.K. Storage Expo. The product offers RAID-5 support 3 Gbps SAS and SATA II drive interfaces.

Change management software startup Onaro Inc. announced the appointment of Doug McNary as president and CEO, and member of the company's board of directors.
