Storage Clips: NetApp unveils two midrange filers

NetApp announces two midrange filers, the FAS3020 and FAS3050, with a SATA option and associated V-Series virtualization engines.

NetApp beefs up midrange line
Network Appliance Inc. unveiled two new midrange storage systems -- the FAS3020 and FAS3050 -- plus a new SATA option for primary storage applications. NetApp also announced two new V-Series virtualization engines -- the NetApp V3020 and V3050. The FAS3000 series scales up to 84 terabytes (TB) with 336 disks. The company did not release pricing details.

BlueArc adds virtual servers, policy-based migration
High-end NAS provider BlueArc Inc. announced its first major software release adding features to its Titan system, including virtual servers, policy-based data migration, iSCSI support, remote volume mirroring and write one, read many file system support. The virtual server feature allows administrators to create eight logical servers in a single physical system. Each server can have a separate address and policies associated with it, which is useful for workflow cycles, failover, load balancing, scheduled maintenance and creating a farm of servers.

Quantum takes covers off midrange library
Quantum Corp. announced the PX510, a 100-400 cartridge slot midrange tape library for customers that are consolidating storage systems and combining disk- and tape-based in a tiered storage model. The PX510 is 18U per module, with up to 10 tape drives and 171 SDLT or 201 linear tape open cartridge slots and native performance per module of up to 2.9 TB per hour. The PX510 is shipped with redundant power supplies and fans, as well as hot-swappable tape drives. Quantum also offers Web-based tools for remote management, diagnostics, upgrades and operations built into the PX510 at no additional cost. It will be generally available in the third quarter, 2005.

EMC extends OEM deal with FAST
Earlier this year, EMC Corp. announced it would integrate Fast Search and Transfer's InStream search engine into its Centera disk-based archiving system. This relationship has been extended to integrate InStream with EMC's Documentum 5.3 content management software. Documentum is used by 2,500 businesses worldwide.

Mimosa offers archiving for Exchange
Mimosa Systems Inc. announced the release of Mimosa NearPoint archiving software for Microsoft Exchange Server. Mimosa NearPoint provides mailbox and message recovery, disaster recovery, e-mail archiving and self-service search, and access for Exchange users.

AMCC drops SATA RAID controller prices
Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) announced new channel pricing for its 3ware 8500 and 9500 Series four-port SATA RAID controller kits. The lower pricing is available to VARs and system builders through AMCC's distribution partners. End users can also purchase the controllers directly through online and retail stores, including CDW, Insight, MA Labs and Monarch Computer Systems. Prices for the kits are as follows: 8506 4LP Kit -- $329 MSRP and 9500s-4LP Kit -- $359 MSRP.
