What are some good data migration strategies for SMBs?
There are several data migration strategies small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) should consider before undergoing data migration. First, make sure that data consistency and coherency are maintained so that the data that is migrated is actually usable. To do this, make sure that an exact copy of whatever data is migrated and moved is obtained, which can be done by looking at checksums, verification or comparing migrated vs. source.

Another aspect of maintaining data consistency is to make sure that all data is de-staged to disk before migration. The data that may still be in memory or in buffers also must be de-staged to disk. After all, what good is a 100% completed and verified copy of a storage device if only 99.99% of the data is on disk with the other .01% still in memory?

Consequently, when it comes to migrating data, make sure that the copy actually has a verification or validation step to insure what is moved or migrated ends up intact at the destination. Likewise, before removing the source, make sure that the destination is correct or has a good backup prior to the migration. If you want to migrate your data while the data is in use, schedule some downtime when no writes or updates are occurring during the migration. For the physical migration of the data, you can use data backup, data restore or copy tools that are part of applications or operating systems, third party tools, and specialized data migration technologies from different vendors.
