PCIe SSD pooling technology vs. storage-array-based SSD cards

Independent storage expert Marc Staimer compares PCIe SSD pooling technology like QLogic's Mt. Rainier FabricCache and storage-array-based SSDs.

What can products like QLogic's Mt. Rainier FabricCache that allow pooling across server PCIe cards offer that SSDs in a networked storage array can't, if anything?

Products such as FabricCache offer little functionality that SSDs in networked storage arrays cannot.

What they can and do bring to the table is lower latency and subsequent higher performance that comes with placing the PCIe SSD cards in the physical server -- as long as the application accessing the PCIe SSD is on the same server and does not have to traverse the storage area network.

Even then, it still will have lower latency because it does not have to go through a storage controller. Products of this type also have a lower initial investment and can be grown incrementally with smaller atomic units.
