Finding a standard utilization rate
We currently have 40 TB of SAN attached storage with approximately 90% of this assigned to Oracle databases. We are running at a utilization rate of 81%. Due to the high cost of storage, we are being asked to better our utilization rates.
I'm looking for a target. What utilization rate is "standard" in the SAN market place?
This is a great question - I wish I knew the answer. I wouldn't try to max the utilization much more above 85% on your Oracle systems without getting some help from Oracle. Who knows? You might already be suffering some in performance at this level. The more heavily utilized storage is, the more difficult it is for the filing system (in this case Oracle) to find free space for new data and system performance can lag. Talk to an Oracle SE to get their guidance.
