Converged Enhanced Ethernet vs. Data Center Bridging

Learn what Converged Enhanced Ethernet vs. Data Center Bridging is in this expert response by Randy Kerns.

What is Converged Enhanced Ethernet?
This is an example of name changes that have occurred that can be confusing. Converged Enhanced Ethernet and Data Center Ethernet are now called Data Center Bridging (DCB). Data Center Bridging enables consolidation of I/O traffic over 10 Gigabit Ethernet today.

Storage systems require that packets are delivered in the correct order. Ethernet traditionally allowed packets to be discarded when traffic is heavy and that can result in packets arriving out of order.

Data Center Bridging has introduced the functions of Priority Flow Control, Congestion Notification, and Enhanced Transmission Selection to allow storage I/O protocols to be used over Ethernet.
