Backup and disaster recovery (DR) hardware finalists: 2009 Products of the Year

Find out the six finalists in the backup and disaster recovery (DR) hardware category in the 2009 Storage magazine and SearchStorage.com Products of the Year competition.

Below are the six finalists in the backup and disaster recovery (DR) hardware category in the 2009 Storage magazine and SearchStorage.com Products of the Year competition. They are listed alphabetically.

Axxana Phoenix System RP

Axxana offers what it calls "synchronous replication over asynchronous infrastructure." Its Phoenix System RP product combines EMC Corp.'s RecoverPoint asynchronous replication software for replication over distance with its own local synchronous recording mechanism. Should a disaster occur, the Phoenix system will send any uncommitted changes to the secondary site, bridging the gap between synchronous and asynchronous data protection.

Barracuda Networks Inc. Barracuda Backup Service

With its 2009 acquisition of Yosemite Technologies, Barracuda added advanced backup software features like application-aware snapshot agents to its well-established online backup service.

EMC Corp./Data Domain DD880 Enterprise Deduplication Storage System

In the midst of all the drama surrounding its acquisition by EMC, Data Domain brought out its first quad-socket, quad-core processor system, the DD880, with twice the throughput and capacity of its next largest box, the dual-socket, quad-core DD690.

ExaGrid Systems Inc. EX10000E

This product sits at the nexus between two popular technology trends—scale-out network-attached storage (NAS) management for storage and data deduplication. Like ExaGrid's other products, the EX10000E offers global data deduplication across multiple physical nodes in its clustered system, making it easily expandable while parallelizing performance.

i365, A Seagate Company EVault Plug-n-Protect

Seagate's i365 subsidiary offered its EVault backup service in a new all-in-one appliance in 2009 for easier deployment, particularly for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Hardware, software, agents, plug-ins, central management, data deduplication and bare-metal recovery are standard features.

Spectra Logic Corp.'s BlueScale Version 10.6

Spectra Logic's BlueScale 10.6 storage management software delivers high availability with enterprise tape features generally found only in disk arrays. This version of the software offers a RAID-like "hot spare" tape drive for data protection within Spectra Logic's large-scale tape silos.
