Storage White Papers:

Achieving New Storage Backup Performance Levels

ABOUT THIS WHITE PAPER
Date Published:
01 APR 2003

About the White Paper:
In today's IT environments, database downtime is not an option. Developing a fast, reliable online database backup solution is critical to achieving and maintaining a consistent level of availability. Despite recent advances in disk snapshot and mirroring techniques, only tape backup can provide the guaranteed ability to recover from a catastrophe. There is just one problem with tape - it's so slow.

Not any more!

This Whitepaper details how HP developed a proof point to show that using a single HP Enterprise class library with Ultrium tape technology, a live Oracle9i database could be backed up at over 3TB/Hr and restored at over 1TB/Hr. HP OpenView Storage Data Protector software, integrated with Oracle9i recovery manager (RMAN) was used to control the backup and restore. Understand the hardware architecture considerations and Oracle RMAN tuning parameters needed in order to achieve high performance backup.

Find out how after further analysis of the restore performance HP was able to double the restore performance to over 2 TB/Hr, since many customers value restore performance even more than backup performance because downtime is so costly.
