McClure on Syncplicity: EMC file sharing is right on track

Date: May 07, 2014

In a mobile world where users want to be able to access files from SharePoint or their home directories while looking at their phones or iPads, the file sync-and-share market continues to speed along, striving to keep up with enterprise market demands.

At EMC World 2014, there was plenty of talk about EMC's file-sharing product -- Syncplicity -- about security and EMS's ability to integrate with mobile device managers in this quickly evolving technology sphere.

"It's been interesting to watch Syncplicity grow over the last couple of years," said Terri McClure, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. "This week they [EMC] announced integration with the Documentum platform, and integration with Microsoft SharePoint. And basically they integrate with any enterprise content management platform."

Syncplicity also added a Storage Vault Authentication function to set security controls on storage repositories. Simply put, security has been a showstopper in the file sync-and-share market, or, as one EMC exec speaking at EMC World 2014 said, "Security has been at odds with usability."

But McClure, who has written extensively about the threat that rogue file sharing creates,  believes EMC went a long way at EMC World 2014 to make Syncplicity appealing to enterprise customers.

When I look at the things they have done with Syncplicity -- a year ago they announced integration with back-end Isilon -- this is another stop in that journey," McClure said. It was November of last year when EMC Isilon MobileIQ was announced for users who wanted to tap into the Syncplicity mobile app to access their Isilon-based fileshares.
