Data migration product specifications

This chapter of the Tiered Storage Buying guide focuses on product specifications for data migration tools.

This Content Component encountered an error
Data migration takes data from one folder, partition, disk, or disk subsystem, then places that data into another physical location. In many cases, data is migrated to accommodate tiered storage or a data classification initiative. In other cases, data is moved from an old storage system to a new platform.

Migrating hundreds of gigabytes, or even terabytes, requires an efficient tool with the intelligence to recognize data types and follow policies that can aid in automating the migration process. There are many data migration tools to choose from, and the actual choice depends upon an evaluation of transparency, interoperability with storage systems and data, complexity, policy enforcement, and other factors. The specifications below...

are data migration tools that were selected based on input from industry analysts and SearchStorage.com editors. These specs were provided by vendors and are current as of January 2008. They are periodically updated. Vendors are welcome to submit their updates and new product specifications to Matt Perkins.

    Snapshot #1
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Product: Brocade Data Migration Manager (DMM) from Brocade Communications Systems Inc.

Storage system support: Designed for migration of SAN-based block data.
Application support: Brocade DMM is a physical LUN migrator independent of any application specific requirements such as plug-ins. It can be used to migrate LUNs for any application. For online migrations when applications must operate continuously, DMM leverages industry-standard multi-pathing software such EMC PowerPath, HP SecurePath, and Veritas Volume Manager.
Migration features: Data migration for heterogeneous data centers; true tiered storage; reduces application downtime with terabyte-per-hour migration speeds; supports local and remote (distance) data migrations; uses Brocade routing technology (Brocade 7500) to perform migrations across SANs and WANs.
Data cleansing features: None; data cleansing is done before migration and outside of the DMM.
Data collection features: Leverages MPIO stack on the host to start collecting data/information on LUNs such as number of LUNs, LUN size, serial number and vendor ID. Monitors the migration status and displays migration size, steps completed, estimate of completion time, as well as migration configuration options used, etc.
Management features: A Wizard-based GUI interface as well as scriptable CLI support for more advanced ease of operation and automation; in-band discovery and management; ability to import Device Names in a single easy step; ability to pause, resume, abort, or throttle migrations.
Automation features: Automatic creation of migration pairs; automatic zoning between Host and VT as well as VI and back-end storage; estimating the migration time; scheduler-based migration; ability to configure up to 1024 LUN pairs (512 LUNs in Online mode) for scheduled migrations of up to 128 concurrent LUNs.
Operating system: DMM supports all major operating systems for offline migrations. Online migrations requires Windows, HP-UX, Solaris and AIX OS environments.
System requirements: The DMC server can be installed on the same computer as the client, or on another computer that has access to DMM. If the server and client are the same system, use 2 GHz P4 CPU, 1.5 GB RAM, 1 GB Virtual Memory, 2GB free disk space required. A server-only requires 1.8 GHz P4 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 512 MB virtual memory, and 2GB free disk space. A client-only requires 800 MHz CPU, 256 MB RAM, 512 MB virtual memory, and 2GB free disk space required.
Implementation: To ensure configuration flexibility, DMM solution is deployed on the intelligent Brocade SAN Fabric Application Platform AP7420 and includes all necessary software and licenses except the capacity licenses. The solution is designed for easy wire-once setup; organizations can quickly implement DMM simply by connecting it to an existing SAN. Offline migrations require only one DMM appliance. Online migrations ensure high availability using a 2-node cluster of DMM appliances.
Interoperability: DMM supports heterogeneous staorage arrays from all major storage vendorsm including EMC, HP, IBM and Hitachi.
    Availability: DMM 2.0 currently available

    Product Snapshot #2
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Product: File System Manager from CA

Storage system support: Supports a wide range of file systems (Not designed for PCs and workstations).
Application support: The product is designed for file systems only; it does not include support for applications.
Migration features: Organize data and storage resources that span multiple systems into logical groups using access frequency, file size and type, storage cost, model, etc; drive file movement, copy, and deletion actions across multiple systems based on established classifications and policies; automatically migrate data from primary storage to secondary or tertiary storage while maintaining transparent end-user access; automate storage consolidation from initial planning to transparent migration of end user files and directories; enable administrators to simulate data management policies before actual execution in order to better understand their scope and effectiveness.
Data cleansing features: The product uses the native deletion process available on the supported operating system/storage platform.
Data collection features: Uses an agent-less approach for data collection, which eliminates the need to install and maintain server agents. The administrator configures the software to scan each server and NAS device in the network using industry-standard protocols such as CIFS and NFS. Data collection process can be manually launched by the administrator on a select group of servers or it can be done on a regularly scheduled time interval. The tool collects information on total available and used capacity by servers, by volumes, and by exports/shares, as well as at the file-level for information such as size, file type, owner, creation date, last modified date and last accessed date, path, and user group information.
Management features: Modular design allows existing policies to be dynamically updated in the case that data and/or storage resources have changed, so admins can manage the system more efficiently. This approach is based on the creation of logical groups that represent business value or ownership of the data. For files owned by one department, any new data matching that criteria automatically becomes a part of that group and can be operated on by a policy. Group resources are also "global" in nature, allowing data or storage from multiple servers to be logically associated.
Automation features: The Policy Automation Engine is responsible for executing the data management actions. Unlike other policy-based solutions, it uses a patented algorithm to select files for movement based on detailed parameters such as age, size, last modified, last accessed date (among others), combined with the business valuation that the administrator specifies.
    Operating system: Windows 2003, 2000, NT 4.0; Sun Solaris 2.6, 2.7, 8, 9, 10; HP-UX 11, 11i; IBM AIX 4.3.3, 5.x; Red Hat Linux; SGI IRIX; NetWare 4.x, 5.x, 6; Mac OS X; NetApp Storage Appliances; EMC Celerra, Centera; NAS devices
System requirements: Windows Server, Dual Pentium class 1GHz or greater speed processors, 80 GB free disk space, 1GB DRAM, 10/100 Network Adapter (or better).
Implementation: Design of the architecture. based on storage platforms, network topology, target storage configuration; Installation of server hardware and CA FSM software according to architecture; Definition business goals and creation of policies that support goals; Testing of limited data – end to end and retrieval; Staged deployment of polices to accommodate network and capacity constraints.

Product: Unicenter Desktop DNA from CA

Storage system support: Unicenter Desktop DNA supports migration from Windows desktop and laptop PCs to any removable media (Zip disk, CD, DVD, etc.)
Application support: Supports creating a DNA file with the PC's data and settings and saving it to any location on the network where there is space to store the files, either a server or an HTTP server location. DNA does not store the data in a data base structure.
Migration features: Can migrate thousands of these customized settings across 160 applications, between the same or different versions of these applications. This enables users to remain productive, rather than having to re-create preferences such as custom dictionaries, macros, display properties and so on.
    Data cleansing features: None
Data collection features: Filter functionality allows you to scavenge data from anywhere it exists on your hard drive. You can create include filters, exclude filters (excluding files of a specified file extension from the entire migration), or omit filters (excluding files of a specified file extension from being collected using a specific filter). The criteria in the filters can include file name, location, modification or creation date, size and file types. You can also specify that when the data is applied to the new machine that it retains the current directory structure, or you can redirect each filter or all filters to a different file location on the destination PC.
Automation features: Can be triggered to run from a central location using shared configuration resources, such as option files and templates. Environment variables unique to each PC can be used to differentiate homogenous PC DNA. Once the migration process is complete, return codes can be used to trigger the next steps in a larger overall process. All automation can be handled in "Quiet Mode" invisible to the user.
Operating system: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista

Automated, policy-based provisioning of destination volume resources which simplifies the operational challenges associated with data migration. Manage migration priority to eliminate resource contention.
Data cleansing features: iNSP is a network volume level data migration solution designed specifically for block-based storage. It has no visibility into host data structures like files, databases, etc. and therefore does not provide any data cleansing capabilities.
Data collection features: Performs deep discovery of the underlying SAN and storage environment to facilitate intelligent resource allocation when configuring network virtual volumes, copies or migration destinations. It understands the internal configuration of the arrays being virtualized (including the LUN to disk drive mapping) as well as the logical and physical SAN configuration. This information is used to select storage resources and SAN pathing when configuring the destination location of a volume migration.
Management features: Users can actively move application data within a fabric without disruption to applications and respective hosts accessing the data that is being moved. With iNSP, application data can be moved without halting I/O and with little to no performance degradation to the application. Network virtual volumes are created and presented to hosts for I/O, allowing storage to be provisioned to the host once and grown (increase size), transformed (change RAID Layout), migrated (change physical location), copied, replicated (to remote locations), and decommissioned without application disruption or the overhead of reconfiguring the SAN or the disruption caused by scheduled application outages. iNSP centralizes migration services, with common management that can be used to move data within an array or between arrays having similar or different storage characteristics (i.e. different models, vendors, etc.).
Automation features: Deep discovery of the underlying SAN and storage environment to facilitate intelligent resource allocation when configuring virtual volumes, copies or migration destinations; automated provisioning aggregates multiple individual storage management operations into a single provisioning task. Automates the storage and SAN resource selection based on predefined policies and the deep discovery information; workflow and change management control to implement an approval process and limit when changes can be executed; migration task monitoring, completion estimate, priority control, and pause/resume to mitigate impact on production applications.
Operating system: Completely SAN switch-resident; does not have any components that need to run on the application server. Supports the following host operating systems: (Windows, Linux, Unix (AIX, HP UX, Solaris).
System requirements: Comprised of two major software components: iNSP, a switch-resident module, and the Web-based module, iNSP Administrator.
Implementation: The software runs on the Cisco MDS 9000 SAN switch with the Storage Service Module installed.
