The missing array controllers

The missing array controllers

Don't believe everything you see when running the vxinstall procedure to install Veritas storage management software through Version 3.1.1 on a Sun StorEdge T3+ storage array with Version 2.0 controller

firmware. There may well be more Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) in each array partner group than the vxinstall software displays.

Vxinstall only displays the first connected HBA in each array partner group even when it detects more than one path to the group. This can lead the SAN administrator to assume -- incorrectly -- that the other HBAs have not connected. This is more of a puzzle than a problem since the Veritas Volume Manage software in fact recognizes the other paths the array partner groups and when you reboot the host at the end of vxinstall they will be handled correctly.

Sun discusses this in Release Note 4282806, which is published with a number of other application notes about the T3+ array with Rev. 2.0 firmware in a document titled "Sun StorEdge Array Release Notes -- Version 2.0 Controller Firmware" (Sun part # 816-1983-10) which is available on the Sun Web site.
