- 64-port FC/9000s are field-upgradeable to 128-port versions. Current 64-and 128-port directors will be field-upgradeable to 256-port version in the future.
- Scalability refers to the number of directors that can be linked together.
- All ports can assume any of the following: F_port, FL_port, E_port, TL_port (Translative Mode = allows public-to-private and private-to-public bridging).
- Extended Fabrics extends full fabric SAN-to-SAN connectivity from 10 kilometers to 120 kilometers through the use of different buffering allocation and credit handling, extended distance GBICs, and fibre channel repeaters over Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) or dark fiber Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs). The switch ISLs (E_ports) are configured with up to 60 buffer credits to ensure near-full bandwidth performance. The maximum distance allowed for 1-Gibt products is 120 kilometers. For 2 Gbit products the maximum distance is 60 kilometers. Each device attached appears as a local device to simplify management.
- Extended Credit Addressing Facility (XCAF) technology that allows any port on the FC/9000 to communicate over 100 kilometers without any performance degradation. XCAF FIO's guarantees 64 credits for 100 km support. The XCAF technology is useable with DWDM offerings in the enterprise space.
