IBM announced an interoperability agreement with Hewlett-Packard whereby IBM and HP will cross license application program interfaces (APIs) and command line interfaces (CLI) to support development and delivery of storage management solutions for selected storage arrays from the two companies. This agreement will enable HP OpenView storage management software to manage IBM's Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) and IBM's storage management software to manage the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) and Enterprise Modular Array (EMA) storage systems. The specific HP products are the HSG110 based EVA arrays and the HSG80 based EMA arrays.

Both companies stressed their continued support for a standards-based management platform based on the Common Information Model (CIM) and Bluefin.

Evaluator Group comments:

One significant difference between this agreement and previously announced exchange agreements by other companies is that the previous agreements were limited to exchanging APIs and CLIs on a "function-for-function" basis. Therefore, the management capabilities could be limited and customers could not be assured that they were getting full management capabilities. Under this agreement the companies will be exchanging full-function capabilities.

Evaluator Group is also a supporter of industry standards such as CIM and Bluefin. However, it will be some time before these standards become approved and generally accepted. In the mean time customers need solutions today to address the growing problem of storage management. This agreement addresses this need.
