application-aware storage

Show me everything on Data management tools

Word of the Day

DEFINITION - Application-aware storage is a storage system with built-in intelligence about relevant applications and their utilization patterns. Once the storage "understands" the applications and usage conditions, it is possible to optimize data layouts, caching behaviors, and quality of service (QoS) levels. This is a particularly challenging goal because application-aware storage does not run application code locally. Instead, it demands significant integration between the operating system (OS), the host bus adapter (HBA), and the applications themselves.

Application-aware storage allows storage managers to better utilize commodity disks for low-priority applications, while still getting the best possible performance, capacity and reliability for mission critical applications. Application awareness can be particularly useful for boosting performance in storage-intensive tasks such as archiving, backups, disaster recovery, replication, data modeling, and index/search.

Learn more about Data management tools
Data migration tools take SMBs to the next tier: Data migration and tiered storage tutorial: SMBs can use inexpensive and easily available migration tools and virtualization platforms to tier storage data, save money, and increase performance.
Managing capacity planning with thin provisioning: Massachusetts pharmaceuticals company uses thin provisioning in 3PAR InServ S800 system to manage capacity planning for scientist's hard-to-predict data storage needs.
Improving storage utilization with thin provisioning: Investment company uses FalconStor Software's Network Storage Server arrays to gain control of storage utilization, and clears capacity for data replication via thin provisioning.
Thin provisioning brings utilization and capacity benefits to data storage, but with a caveat: Thin provisioning can deliver benefits to enterprise data storage environments, but it's been hobbled by concerns over capacity overload and sluggish support from major vendors.
Addressing data growth with enterprise data storage management tools: Our five-part series looks at enterprise data storage management tools, including those for disaster recovery, virtualization, thin provisioning, data storage monitoring and more.
