Storage Management Tools
Quest Software Inc. vFoglight Storage 1.0
The product's distinguishing characteristics include the visibility it provides beyond the virtual data store to the physical storage, as well as the ability to roll back in time to enable administrators to see the underlying topology and performance metrics, from virtual machine to disk, at the time a problem occurred.
Topology and on-the-fly graphical views display the relationships between different pieces of the virtual and physical storage infrastructure, and alerts and alarms spotlight deviations from accepted best practices. The product also provides out-of-the-box reports on performance, capacity and alarms.
"This goes above and beyond the standard storage performance tools," an IT professional on the judging panel commented.
One of the judges commented, "Excellent and useful metrics to help get the value out of storage assets that already have been purchased and deployed."
Metrics detected and displayed include latency, IOPS, MB/sec throughput, and the number of reads and writes. Capacity metrics include size, used/committed and number/amount of entities (ports, controllers, memory, cache).
The product currently supports all NetApp Inc. filers (both iSCSI and Fibre Channel) with the exception of the V-Series, and EMC Corp. Clariion C Series arrays (both iSCSI and Fibre Channel). Quest plans to add support for other storage systems from EMC, as well as those from Dell Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., Hitachi, IBM and other vendors.
The vFoglight product can monitor Fibre Channel switches that support Brocade Communications Systems Inc.'s SMI Agent and Cisco Systems Inc.'s SAN-OS.
Pricing for vFoglight Storage 1.0 is $499 per CPU socket. Each physical CPU socket on a VMware ESX Server host source requires one CPU license; a quad processor ESX Server host requires 4 CPU licenses.
