EMC Corp., Hopkinton, Mass., on Monday announced an overhaul of its EMC Centera content addressed storage (CAS) system. The upgrade includes a promise of better performance, double the data replication speeds of previous models and application programming interface (API) support for IBM's z/OS mainframe environments.
Chuck Hollis, vice president of platforms marketing at EMC, said the new Centera has double the processor speed and drive capacity of the first generation product allowing it to store roughly 30 million e-mails per day.
The new Centera also features a native application programming interface (API) that lets mainframe users take data from a mainframe environment and use it anywhere in the data center.
"The Centera API for mainframes will open up a new opportunity for [mainframe users] in an area that has really been underserved. It will be interesting to see the software vendors that exploit this in the mainframe application area," Hollis said.
EMC Centera now offers two ways of interfacing to the mainframe. The first is through the Centera z/OS API for integrated applications and the second is through EMC's BusTech gateway for applications not currently integrated with the Centera API.
EMC said Centera's content addressing technology gives one user the ability to manage up to 350 TBs of fixed content storage.
