Connectivity makers scramble to support blades
QLogic Corp. introduced the QLogic QMH2462, a 4 Gbit Fibre Channel host bus adapter (HBA) for the Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) BladeSystem c-Class. The HBA is a member of the SANblade Pro 2400 series, specifically engineered for the new HP BladeSystem. Brocade Communications Systems Inc., also announced that it is providing a new embedded SAN switch module for the BladeSystem c-Class. The new Brocade SAN switch module offered by HP is a 24-port 4 Gbps integrated SAN switch.

According to an April 2006 report from analyst firm IDC, worldwide unit shipments of bladed servers increased 63.6% in 2005, and spending for this sector increased to over 80%. Brocade itself reported a record first quarter for SAN bladed server modules. The switch maker also announced that it has launched a new 4 Gbps embedded SAN switch module (Brocade SilkWorm 4016) for Fujitsu Siemens Computers' blade server line, as well.

HP, meanwhile, has announced its intention to redesign virtually all its servers into the bladed format. The announcement of the c-Class this week encompassed HP's own PA-RISC chips, as well as Intel Pentium IIIs and the new "PowerBar" chassis, will find its way into storage and other specialized servers, according to reports. The first c-Class offerings will be Linux-only, with Windows and HP-UX to follow.
