Data breach affects 196,000 HP employees
A laptop computer containing the names, Social Security numbers, compensation and other information for 196,000 current and former Hewlett-Packard (HP) employees was stolen on the night of March 15, HP confirmed Wednesday, in a story first reported by the Associated Press.
The employees were all participants in HP's retirement plans administered by Fidelity Investments. Fidelity sent e-mails and letters overnight Tuesday to the retirement plan participants notifying them that the Fidelity laptop had been taken; Fidelity also said it has increased monitoring of its HP accounts and added more authentication measures for affected users to access their accounts.
EMC, IBM sign licensing agreement
EMC announced a licensing agreement with IBM that provides EMC with interfaces for storage interoperability and technical support for the IBM System i platform. The five-year agreement will enable compatibility between IBM i5/OS and EMC Symmetrix storage systems and software.
As part of the agreement, the two companies' engineering teams will work together, and IBM will provide technical specifications and new releases of software to allow EMC networked storage systems to attach to IBM System i products. Financial terms are not being disclosed.
DPS introduces hard drive migration utility
Data Protection Solutions (DPS) announced the release of EzBackup IM Data Protection Software. EzBackup IM gives Windows users the ability to create a bootable mirror image copy of their system and data on a new hard drive at a rate of 1 GB per minute. Another new feature is the EzExpander, which gives users the ability to expand the partition of the new hard drive.
NSI to become Double-Take Software
NSI Software Inc. announced the company will now be doing business as Double-Take Software. Double-Take Software also recently moved headquarters to Southborough, Mass. CEO Dean Goodermote, who joined the company last year, and top level executives are based in the Boston area. The Double-Take Software rebranding effort and headquarters move to Massachusetts will take effect immediately.
Canada Web Hosting upgrades DR service
Canada Web Hosting recently partnered with Syncsort Inc. to upgrade its managed disaster recovery services. Canada Web Hosting now provides Canadian companies with access to its local and off-site backup networks in Toronto and Vancouver, B.C.
