Daily compilation of storage news:

Data Domain offers gateway
Data Domain has unveiled a gateway version of its disk-to-disk (D2D) backup product dubbed the DD460g Enterprise Restorer. The DD460g gateway transforms Fibre Channel (FC)-attached external disk arrays into storage for long-term data protection. Users can now take advantage of the compression enabled by Data Domain -- 20-50x -- while backing up data to disk arrays in their SANs, improving storage utilization and reducing total cost of ownership, the company said.

The value of Data Domain is its intelligent capacity optimization software," said Tony Asaro, senior analyst for the Enterprise Strategy Group. "It makes total sense to use the storage you've already paid for and combine that with Data Domain for cost-efficient backups to disk. The economics are a no-brainer."

The DD460g is limited to supporting EMC Clariion and Nexsan arrays on the back end today, but Data Domain is working to integrate its software with other storage vendors, including Hitachi Data Systems. The DD460g is available today for $65,000, which includes a FC host bus adapter.

BlueArc helps animate Narnia
BlueArc announced that digital film studio Rhythm & Hues chose BlueArc's Titan Storage System as the storage foundation for the company's visual effects work on the Walt Disney Pictures release, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Rhythm & Hues worked for two years producing the computer generated character animation and visual effects for Aslan the lion and other characters, including the gryphon, minotaur and centaurs, and a battle sequence.

Studio officials said the Titan improved the performance on its storage infrastructure, allowing artists to get files faster, render images faster and improved collaboration.
