European Commission approves compliance measure
The European Commission has adopted a proposal for a Directive on the retention of communications traffic data. The proposal requires European Union providers of publicly available electronic communications and public telecommunications networks to retain data related to mobile and fixed telephony for a period of one year and Internet communication data, for six months. The proposed Directive would not be applicable to the actual content of the communications. It also includes a provision ensuring that the service or network providers will be reimbursed for the demonstrated additional costs they will have.

For its adoption, the proposal requires the approval both of the European Parliament and the Council. The Council is currently discussing an alternative text, a Framework Decision, which would allow for data retention of up to three years and could be adopted by the Council alone.

Dell Wins $100M FAA contract
The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded Dell, Inc. a blanket purchase agreement for desktops, notebooks, servers, storage and peripheral products, such as printers. The one-year agreement is valued at up to $20 million per year with four one-year renewal options.

Cincinnati Insurance chooses EMC
The Cincinnati Insurance Co. has implemented a digital media system based on an EMC Documentum enterprise content management platform and EMC Centera content addressed storage. The digital media system is part of the company's Claims Management System (CMS) that integrates several software applications. CMS provides claim representatives with centralized access to information about claims

Acronis wins Italian customer, upgrades product
Storage management software maker Acronis Inc. announced that CINECA, a interuniversity computing center based in Bologna, Italy, has deployed its True Image Enterprise Server for storage management on 40 servers running the organization's mission-critical Windows applications. Full images of each server are created weekly or monthly, and saved to a storage server.

Other additions to the software include support for differential backups, a files exclusion option that lets the user select only those files that they want to back up, an updated Recovery Wizard that lets the user select image- or file-based restores, and a wizard for enabling and disabling the Windows System Restore Management program in Windows.

AMCC introduces new RAID controllers
Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) introduced its next generation of hardware RAID controllers. The 3ware 9550SX is 200% faster than the company's previous generation 9500S, delivering RAID-5 writes at over 380 MBps and RAID-5 reads at more than 800 MBps. The new controller supports the SATA 2.5 specification and a PCI-X host interface.

Yosemite adds new backup products
Yosemite Technologies Inc. announced the release of Yosemite Backup Advanced 8.1, targeting the small to mid-sized business, which will replace the Yosemite TapeWare product, and Yosemite Backup Desktop 8.1, which will target home users.

CBL adds Houston facility
CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc. has opened a service facility in Houston. The addition of a service facility in Houston was planned to coincide with the opening of a new CBL laboratory in Atlanta. The Houston location was selected to feed data recovery jobs to the Atlanta lab.

Storage vet joins networking startup
Former QLogic Corp. senior vice president of network storage Mike Knudsen will join networking startup Xambala Inc. as president and CEO. Prior to QLogic, Knudsen worked for Toshiba as vice president and general manager of the network products division.

Belarus TV picks Front Porch
Incentra Solutions Inc. announced that its Front Porch Digital Broadcast and Media Division was selected by Belarus TV, the new Belarusian channel, to implement Front Porch's DIVArchive. Belarus TV is a state-owned, noncommercial TV channel broadcasting information about Belarus. Its footage will be stored on the DIV archive using two Omneon Video Networks video servers, an IBM tape library and an automation system from SGT.
