IDC says external disk growing
According to IDC's Worldwide Disk Storage Systems Tracker, the top five vendors -- EMC Corp., IBM, Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP), Dell Inc. and Hitachi Data Systems Inc. accounted for almost 70% of the external disk storage systems market -- up from 68% a year ago. HP gained the most share, but its strong year-over-year performance was due in part to an easy comparison with an unusually weak second quarter in 2004.
The open/iSCSI SAN market grew 17.8% year over year, surpassing $2.0 billion in revenues for the first time. Unlike the first quarter of 2005, there was no clear leader. EMC and HP were in a statistical tie for the first place position. EMC had 25.0% revenue share and HP had 24.8% revenue share for the second quarter.
EMC announces GA of DMX-3
EMC announced general availability of its new flagship high-end storage system, the EMC Symmetrix DMX-3, which was announced on July 25. The first system ordered by a customer, a 960-drive Symmetrix DMX-3 array, has shipped.
IBM to take over Dutch bank IT
ABN Amro Bank on Thursday announced IT services deals totaling $2.2 billion with five companies, the lion's share of which went to IBM. Under the five-year deal, IBM will take over management of most of the Dutch bank's servers, storage systems, desktops and printers.
SmartDisk acquires Zio
Multimedia storage startup SmartDisk Corp. announced that it has acquired the business, and certain assets, of Zio Corp., a privately held maker of digital media readers, video editing and mobile telephone products. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
