Microsoft adds FrontBridge
Microsoft Corp. has acquired managed e-mail services startup Frontbridge Technologies Inc. for an undisclosed fee. The privately held company, based in Marina Del Rey, Calif., offers services, including message archiving, disaster recovery, virus scanning and spam filtering via eight global data centers. Microsoft plans to integrate access to FrontBridge services into its Exchange Server.
IBM rumored to be upgrading mainframe, unveiling NAS IBM plans to announce a significant strategic move in its server and storage systems group next Tuesday, according to industry rumors. Part of the speculation is that IBM will unveil a new zSeries 990 mainframe and unveil a midrange NAS offering based on its relationship with Network Appliance Inc. (NetApp).
HP research also took hit
Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) is discontinuing four research projects at HP Labs as part of a massive restructuring announced this week. About 10% of HP Labs' 700 employees worldwide will also receive layoff notices. Discontinued research projects include the Advanced Software Research team, which was looking into a new operating system for the Internet.
U.K. ISP to use NetApp
U.K. Internet service provider Mistral Internet will be offering NetApp's storage services to its customers, the companies announced yesterday. The NetApp service is deployed on a virtual hardware platform within Mistral's "farm" of generic server platforms.
