I've been having many conversations with users regarding this whole topic of "single instance storage", "object storage" and massive "20x" compression over the past year. Lots of cool technology, lots of vendors, many approaches! Confusion about terminology abounds.
So, while there are a range of different technologies enabling massive amounts of capacity reduction in the data center today, it's time we all agreed on a term so that we can manage vendors on common ground: Capacity optimization is that term.
There is no question that it's a core concept , and you're going to be living with it for the rest of your storage career. And frankly, it's going to be in your living room, in your desktop, and in your media players, too -- there is no escaping this one.
