Hard on the heels of the integration of its PowerQuest and ON Technology acquisitions, Symantec Corp., Cupertino, Calif., will announce on April 19, the formation of its Enterprise Administration Business Unit. This new group will spearhead the company's initiative to combine new and existing products that address storage, systems and security management.
Having gobbled up PowerQuest Corp. and ON Technology Corp. in acquisition deals announced barely a month apart at the end of last year, Symantec is now rolling out products that integrate the diverse functionalities developed by these two infrastructure management companies.
Symantec says its offerings will comprise a complete end-to-end enterprise systems management solution that will extend its reputation beyond security.
On the exhibit floor of the Storage Networking World conference in Phoenix, Ariz., Symantec was showing version 2.0 of V2i, its data protection application originally introduced by PowerQuest. V2i provides real-time, disk-based backup and disaster recovery for Windows systems; Linux support is currently under development.
Steve Fairbanks, director of product management for Symantec's enterprise management applications, said because V2i was designed from the ground up to do disk-based backup, it operates at disk speed and can outperform other solutions that write to disk in tape formats.
V2i can perform "hot" backups without interrupting users or applications. The program's snapshot implementation can compress an entire volume into a single file while still allowing users to view, copy and restore individual folders and files stored within the compressed volume. The compressed image files can be mounted as read-only shared files to allow users to access individual files. The application can also perform bare-metal restorations.
The 2.0 version adds incremental backup, incremental rollback and an improved management console. A demonstration showed off the application's extensive use of wizards and intuitive GUI, which help make it easy to use, requiring very little training to get up to speed, the company says.
Symantec and Snap Appliance Inc. recently announced a partnership that will result in some Snap Server NAS systems bundling the V2i software.
V2i Protector Server Edition costs $1,000 per server; with version 2.0, two new editions are available—a small business ($795) and a desktop edition ($90). Trial versions of all three products are available at Symantec's Web site.
