The best way to connect a NAS device to a SAN
If you want to connect a NAS device to a SAN, NAS expert Randy Kerns says to use a gateway. Randy gives a brief explanation on how gateways work in this expert response.

Do backup software products support WORM devices?
Although backup software products do support WORM devices, they don't do a very good job of it, according to compliance expert Mike Casey. If you're looking to archive data on a WORM device, Mike suggests looking at archiving software not backup software.

Configuring for faster read/write performance
One user wants to know if using RAID 0+1 will speed things up in an HP configuration with dual SAN adapters. SAN expert Chris Poelker says RAID 0+1 will do, depending on a few things. He offers an alternative that may work even better.

Drives with higher MTBF specs tend to last longer
SAN expert Chris Poelker continues his discussion on SCSI and FC disks. If you're concerned about failure rates, size does matter.

Increasing uptime in the data center with a SAN
For increased availability in an already existing environment, SAN expert Chris Poelker says to go with a SAN instead of external RAID. Chris doesn't recommend one vendor over another, but he does list a few companies such as HP and IBM that have low-cost SAN products on the market.

Creating an iSCSI SAN using only Ethernet switches
Find out how to set up a pure iSCSI SAN using only Ethernet switches to manage iSCSI traffic. SAN expert Chris Poelker discusses a few different scenarios, including the ups and downs involved in such a pursuit. For performance, Chris offers a setup example he's used in the past.

Set strategic storage management policies
Author Stephen Foskett believes that storage management policies are the internal laws of an organization. Although some policies are unique to a particular organization, Foskett says most are universal and fit into three categories -- each described here.

Is switching from NetBackup to BrightStor worth it?
If you're thinking of switching your backup software to save money, backup software expert Pierre Dorion suggests you consider certain costs associated with new software, such as training for new skills and revising/recreating automated backup processes imposed by a backup software change, since these can quickly overshadow any licensing cost savings.

Set up persistent binding on an HBA
SAN expert Chris Poelker gives you the code to set up persistent binding on a host bus adapter (HBA) for a Unix host. Several steps are involved in this process but if you follow Chris's advice, you should get it done the right way.

The misconceptions of compliance
With fairly new compliance rules and regulations in place some information about compliance can be confusing, wrong and passed along as a product of FUD. This Featured Topic aims to clear up some of the misconceptions of complicance.

Backup School lesson four: Database backup
Databases like Oracle and SQL Server are mission critical to any organization and very tough to backup and restore. In Lesson four of SearchStorage.com's "Backup School" professor Dorian Cougias dissects the anatomy of database backup, transaction logs and how to repair the database in the event of failure.
