Software polices Windows storage

Nashua, N.H.-based NTP Software released version 5.0 of its Quota & File Sentinel (QFS) software this week with new support for storage on the Windows Server 2003 platform. QFS lets users enforce usage policies by monitoring storage on a server-by-server basis across a network rather than assigned to individual servers, which makes it possible to apply storage policies efficiently throughout a network.

QFS 5.0 snoops out storage usage patterns with a new Web-based analysis tool called Storage Investigator. The software also includes tighter storage security options a tool specifically for managing filers from Network Appliance Inc.

Maranti gets green light from LSI, HDS

Maranti Networks, San Jose, Calif., is putting in work to get its CoreSTOR family of network storage controllers tested and working with hardware from the major array vendors. This week Maranti announced it has completed certification testing with LSI Logic Storage Systems and Hitachi Data Systems.

The CoreSTOR family earned LSI Logic Storage Systems compatibility certification, meaning they work with LSI's enterprise storage platforms.

Maranti's storage virtualization, mirroring and Storage Quality of Service (SQoS) were tested as part of the certification process, demonstrating network-based storage services across the family of LSI Logic Storage Systems products. Testing included real loads and real traffic to assure stability, interoperability and fault tolerance.

"The LSI Logic Storage Systems certification will accelerate deployments of Maranti technology across enterprise data centers," Debbie Miller, president and CEO, Maranti Networks, stated in a press release.

Maranti also completed a series of tests within HDS' Interoperability Demonstration Program (IDP) with the HDS Hitachi Freedom Storage Lightning 9900 V and Lightning 9900 Series product families. The configurations used as a part of the testing included using Maranti CoreSTOR Network Storage Controllers connected to Hitachi Freedom Storage Solutions in various deployment scenarios under heavy traffic loads.

Virtualization appliance aims to ease SAN management

Troika Networks Inc. and StoreAge Networking Technologies announced a version of the StoreAge SVM management platform has been specifically designed for Troika Network's Accelera Network Storage Services (NSS) Platform. The combined systems will offer StoreAge's storage management software with Troika's platform for hosting network-based storage services software. This new integrated solution will ship in volume later this year.

Features of StoreAge SVM for the Troika Accelera NSS Platform include StoreAge multiView, multiCopy, and multiMirror.

The new solution supports configurations for fault-tolerant networks and static load balancing for distributing loads across a SAN and "performance pooling." The joint solution supports Solaris 8 and 9, Windows 2000, Linux RedHat 9 and RedHat ES, and VMware ESX Service 2.0.1 hosts and is undergoing testing with Microsoft Cluster Server and Veritas Dynamic MultiPathing.

New NAS line hits the streets

Yet another vendor has entered the NAS market with a line of storage filers based on the Windows Server 2003 operating platform. Fastora, City of Industry, Calif., announced the availability of its new family of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet NAS servers this week.

Fastora's portfolio of NAS servers include the PowerStor and LiteStor families offer up to 8 IDE, hot-swappable drive bays for more than 2TB of storage capacity in RAID 0, 1, 5 and JBOD configurations.

Pricing for the Windows-powered LiteStor and PowerStor products ranges from $950 for a 600GB configuration to $3,995 for a 2.4TB system.
