Appliance grades backup successes and failures

Appliance gathers, reports backup info

Network Engines Inc., Canton, Mass., and Bocada Inc., Bellevue, Wash., on Thursday announced the general availability of the BackupReport Appliance, a standalone server that combines the agentless reporting and analysis capabilities of Bocada's BackupReport software with Network Engines' dedicated hardware device.

BackupReport looks at the relative success or failure of an organization's backup processes. The appliance extracts data from backup software packages including products from Veritas, Legato, Computer Associates, IBM and Hewlett Packard and presents it in an open schema SQL database through four integrated modules BackupReport collects, stores, analyzes and distributes information on data protection operations, according to Bocada.

The BackupReport Appliance is available from TidalWire, Network Engines' distribution operations, with pricing beginning at $14,999.

Legato tweaks software for disk-to-disk backup

Woodland Hills, Calif.-based Nexsan Technologies Inc. has joined forces with EMC Corp. software subsidiary Legato Systems to combine Nexsan's InfiniSAN line of disk-based storage systems with Legato's NetWorker, DiskXtender, EmailXtender and RepliStor products for disk-based backup.

Jocelyn Johnson, director of solutions marketing at Legato, said in a press release that "joining Nexsan's S2 Program and providing our suite of data access, protection and availability software with Nexsan's disk-based storage helps us meet this need and further provide our customers with solutions that help them achieve their goals."

Disk-based backup gets an overhaul

Lockstep Systems Inc. joined the upgraded its disk-based backup tool this week with the introduction of Backup for Workgroups 2.0. According to Lockstep, Scottsdale, Ariz., Backup for Workgroups is a disk-based backup and disaster recovery software utility designed for networked Windows servers and workstations.

Highlights of the upgrade include full support for Microsoft Exchange Servers, Active Directory and enhanced support for Windows Servers, including Windows Small Business Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003.

Lockstep Systems is offering free upgrades to current, registered users of Backup for Workgroups version 1. Registered users may upgrade their Backup for Workgroups Data Repository and their existing backup client licenses to the new version 2.0 workstation client licenses at no charge.

Backup for Workgroups version 2.0 can be purchased direct from Lockstep Systems' website or from an authorized Lockstep reseller. A 30 day trial version is available for download from http://www.backup-for-workgroups.com. The trial software allows for the backup of 10 workstations; three Windows servers and one Exchange Server.

Workstation Client licenses start at $99 per client; Server Client licenses to backup one Windows Server are $299 each; and licenses for the Exchange Server Add-On are $249 each.

Fujitsu Siemens to sell VXA-2 tape autoloader

Tape backup specialist Exabyte Corp., Boulder, Colo., has a new partner in its effort to make VXA-2 the tape format of choice for end users.

Exabyte announced that Fujitsu Siemens Computers will offer the new VXA-2 PacketLoader 1x10 1U to its user base. The VXA-2 PacketLoader 1x10 is a 1U rack-mountable automated backup and restore product built with VXA Packet Technology. The autoloader -- Exabyte's newest -- stores up to 1.6 TB of backup data.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers will now offer the VXA-2 PacketLoader as an extension for rack-mounted systems already running at their customer sites, or as an optional storage component for its Intel-based Primergy and Solaris/SPARC-based Primepower servers. The corresponding VXA-2 tape drive has been available since May 2003 either as external storage device or an internal option.
