EMC Corp., Hopkinton, Mass., on Monday announced a new line of Clariion CX networked storage systems that offer faster performance, more platform support and new software options for data migration and backup.

The new models of Clariion share common hardware components, but are designed for different storage environments. The CX300 is targeted for workgroup environments that require direct-attached and full SAN functionality, the CX500 is aimed at departmental applications and the CX700 is EMC's biggest midrange storage array.

Randy Kerns, senior partner with the Evaluator Group Inc., Greenwood Village, Colo., said the new Clariion products are significantly faster and should cost the same price as the older CX200, CX400 and CX600 models.

Perhaps more important than the speeds and feeds of the new line are the software options. Chuck Hollis, EMC's vice president of platforms marketing, said Clariion's newly upgraded SAN Copy software lets users back up data more often and at a lower cost than before.

The SAN Copy software has been tweaked to include an incremental copy function, which allows users to copy data at a faster pace. Customers can also use SAN Copy to migrate data between EMC and non-EMC systems. New SAN Copy support for IBM FAStT and Enterprise Storage Server, Sun's T3 array and Hewlett Packard's MSA100 and EVA3000 arrays has been added to existing support for HP and EMC arrays.

EMC also announced Clariion support for the McDATA IPS 3300 and 4300 iSCSI bridges, allowing customers to start integrating iSCSI into their existing Fibre Channel SAN environments.

EMC said users can "NAS-enable" their new and existing Clariion CX systems via EMC's Celerra NAS gateway products. The new NS700G offers users a way to integrate NAS functionality into Clariion CX storage environments, according to EMC.

The new Clariion CX systems and software are available now.
