Hewlett-Packard Co. and Legato Systems Inc. on Monday announced an expanded partnership that includes the delivery of enterprise-class e-mail archiving products. The move represents an effort to grab a piece of the ripe e-mail retention market. HP said it plans to resell Legato's EmailXtender software as part of an e-mail storage and retrieval solution. EmailXtender supports both Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes e-mail environments. Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP will wrap its own products and services around Mountain View, Calif.-based Legato's software. HP will offer an integrated package of services plus its StorageWorks systems and software around the EmailXtender archiving software. HP also said it has joined forces with Sector Inc., a subsidiary of the Securities Industry Automation Corporation (SIAC), to help customers meet new and emerging regulatory requirements around electronic data retention. Sector manages the collection, indexing, archiving and retrieval of data archives. Mark Sorenson, vice president of storage software for HP, said the Legato archiving software will be flanked by HP's services, storage management software and near-line storage systems. He also said HP will roll out a new services practice around regulatory compliance. "We will resell Legato's [e-mail archiving software] wrapped in the services blanket," Sorenson said. Sorenson said that e-mail is big right now, but the compliance market hasn't "shaken out" yet. "From the storage vendor's view, the environment is not in great shape," he said. "Vendors are looking for new markets and inflection points where they can grow their business." In other words, the e-mail retention market represents an opportunity in an otherwise difficult IT market. Down the line, Sorenson said, HP plans to develop a storage system similar to EMC's Centera, a conent-addressed storage product. "[EMC] is really the only game in town right now for object-based storage, and [they] have a big advantage there in the early stages of the compliance wars," said Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst for the Enterprise Storage Group Inc., in Milford, Mass. Duplessie said that all of the industry "heavyweights" will be contending for what is going to be a net $6 billion market opportunity. "HDS, EMC and NetApp are already running down the path, but it's only [a matter of] time before HP and IBM join the fray." HP and Legato are now offering the HP-Legato E-mail Archiving and Management Service and the HP-Legato Data Archiving Service. HP said it will provide consulting, analysis, configuration and "knowledge transfer" to facilitate the implementation of an archiving, record keeping and compliance management solution.
