Midrange users with a mind for maintaining offsite backup operations have a new option to consider. The Storage Networking Industry Association's (SNIA) Supported Solutions Forum (SSF) has registered a new midrange storage configuration as bug-free and interoperable.

The SNIA said midrange storage users can now combine and support multi-vendor storage systems in their networks, and protect their data with offsite backup.

A slew of storage companies offered up their systems and software to design and test the new blueprint.

Midrange storage users can now use IBM's FAStT700 Storage System with MTI's Vivant 400 storage solution. FalconStor's IPStor Software supports the ability for the user to protect data with remote mirroring, local mirroring or migration to a different storage system. Veritas' Volume Manager Dynamic MultiPathing (DMP) Software, HP's Physical Volume (PV) Links Software and IBM's Redundant Dual Active Controller (RDAC) Software provide the multipathing capability supporting high availability.

The upshot is users can now invoke copy functions between disparate arrays without relying on an array vendor's solution to get it done, but Clipper Group Inc., Chairman and Analyst Mike Kahn said customers are more likely use this configuration for guidance rather than absolute determination.

"These configurations indicate a willingness and determination of the involved vendors to play and succeed in the open arena," Kahn said. "Some customers may buy an exact configuration, but with the pace of new product announcements, these may not be a long-term definition."

Users who implement this configuration have access to a single point for support through the SSF's TSANet-administered Cooperative Support Group Relationship. This relationship provides multi-vendor contact information via the Internet, according to the SNIA. Let us know what you think about the story, e-mail Kevin Komiega, News Writer
