SNIA forms group to tackle storage security |

In response to user concerns surrounding security in networked storage environments, The Storage Networking Industry Association has formed an internal group that will serve as a vendor-neutral breeding ground for ideas and technologies aimed at securing storage networks.
The SNIA Security Industry Forum (SSIF), announced Wednesday, is a customer-and market-focused vendor consortium that will help identify best practices on how to build secure storage networks and promoting standards-based solutions, according to the SNIA.
"Users of storage networks have identified security as one of their primary concerns. The Storage Security Industry Forum will enable SNIA members to collaborate in a vendor-neutral environment and create a focal point for industry and user interchange on secure storage networks," stated Brad Stamas, chairman of the SNIA.
Early participating members of the SSIF include, Adaptec Inc., Brocade Communications Systems Inc., Computer Associates Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM Corp., Infinity I/O Inc., JNI Corp., McData Corp., NeoScale Systems Inc., QLogic Corp., Seagate Technologies Corp., Spectra Logic Corp., and Zyfer Inc.
Another responsibility of the SSIF will be to conduct research and compile a database of the features, benefits, cost justification, ROI calculation methods as well as the best practices of storage security, according to Mike Alvarado, the newly elected chairman of the forum.
Mike Karp, senior analyst at Enterprise Management Associates of Boulder, CO, agreed that the SNIA forum can serve an important role within the industry. "There is an increasing need for research that will help advance technologies in the storage security arena. SNIA vendor members and users working together to develop best practices will accelerate the adoption of sound storage security solutions."
