McData is moving forward, unfettered.

The Broomfield, Colo., maker of storage interconnect devices will sell its host bus adapter (HBA) business to TidalWire Inc., Westborough, Mass.

Under the terms of the deal, McData will outsource its Host Bus Adapter business to TidalWire and has appointed TidalWire as its provider of HBA services. McData, which previously managed customer HBA requirements internally, will rely on TidalWire to handle all HBA-related issues for its customers.

Steve Duplessie, senior analyst and founder of the Enterprise Storage Group Inc., Milford, Mass., said its HBA operation is not a significant part of McData's business. "They really need to be independent of the HBA anyhow."

International Data Corp., analyst, Eric Sheppard, agreed, stating that McData basically resells HBAs at this point in time.

As of June 1, McData sales representatives will direct customer HBA requirements and technical support to TidalWire. For its part, TidalWire will dedicate trained sales and technical support staff to provide customers referred by McData with HBA product information and technical support.

John Kelley, president and chief operating officer, McData, said outsourcing future HBA services to TidalWire allows McData to focus on its core products. McData has faith that TidalWire will fulfill its customers HBA sales needs and technical support.

TidalWire said its representatives will provide McData field representatives with ongoing HBA training. And, as needed, representatives of both companies will work together on joint sales calls.
