Storage Technology and LSI Logic Storage Systems say they've jointly developed a disk storage offering that is expected to compete with large enterprise storage providers such as EMC and Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) -- ultimately by giving users more choices when implementing storage, the companies said.

The new D178 disk storage system and SANtricity Storage Manager 8.0 software are the first in a series of disk-based storage systems and management software born of a new distribution relationship between the companies.

According to Randy Kerns, partner and analyst for the Greenwood Village, Colo.-based Evaluator Group Inc., LSI Logic is going to dedicate a significant number of their sales staff to work with StorageTek in selling distributed storage into the markets that StorageTek calls on.

"This gives LSI the opportunity to help sell product into a market segment they don't normally have access to. StorageTek gets the sales focus for distribute storage systems," he said.

Mitch Seigle, senior marketing director, LSI Logic, Milpitas, Calif., said the immediate benefit for users will be more choices.

"The alliance means more choices for enterprise-class open systems storage and the convenience of single source," said Seigle.

Combining LSI Logic's engineering and manufacturing with StorageTek's large direct sales force, support, and professional services organization and a large installed base among the global 2000, forms a powerful team to compete with EMC and HDS, said Tim Steadman, director of corporate alliances for StorageTek.

Louisville, Colo.-based StorageTek said the D178 works with major SAN hardware and software vendors' products. The included software suite now includes SnapShot copy capability, dynamic volume expansion features as well as remote mirroring capabilities.

The D178 disk subsystem is available worldwide now. SANtricity 8.0 is available now for customers of the StorageTek 9176 disk subsystem.
