Exabyte tape gets RAID-ed for approval
Who said backing-up was hard to do? Exabyte Corp., Boulder, Colo., and Raidtec Corp. announced the compatibility of Raidtec's SNAZ R6 and RAIDserver with Exabyte's M2 and VXA-1 tape drives. With M2, users of Raidtec NAS server appliances now have an integrated backup device, while VXA-1 provides a high reliability option, Exabyte said. According to Exabyte, either backup solution can reduce the saturation and throughput restrictions over a LAN. The M2 tape drive will allow Raidtec users to store and retrieve large amounts of data quickly by delivering a 30 MB/sec compressed transfer rate, and a capacity of up to 60G Bytes (native). The VXA tape drive will cost less than $11 per G Byte for a 66G Byte drive. The SNAZ R6 is a NAS appliance that enables IT Departments to add storage to their LAN in a non-disruptive way, as well as expand into SAN storage when required. It serves up to 430G Bytes of local hot swap RAID-protected storage.

CNT gains EMC SRDF qualification
CNT Corp., Minneapolis, Minn., announced that EMC Corp., has qualified CNT's UltraNet Edge Storage Router as the first to support EMC's Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) as E-Lab Tested in Fibre Channel over IP environments. The Fibre Channel SRDF over IP solution provides customers data replication for business continuance and disaster recovery, data mobility, content distribution, data migration and data sharing across the enterprise, CNT said.

DataCore nabs new reseller
DataCore Software Inc., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., has signedNaviStor, Concord, Mass., to its list of resellers as a SANvantage preferred partner. This partnership provides NaviStor with the support of DataCore's SANvantage storage solutions program, including tools, training and incentives to roll out SANs for its customers. NaviStor uses SANsymphony to offer its customers SAN functionality including heterogeneous host access, snapshot and remote mirroring. NaviStor's solutions let network administrators distribute available volumes from network pools of mixed storage devices and serve capacity to any application server as needed.

An IP SAN in a can
FalconStor Software Inc., Melville, NY, has partnered with Conservor, a Texas-based managed storage services provider, to incorporate IPStor into Conservor'sVIP brand family of IP SAN products. The first system to use IPStor, Ripsnorter VIP, will leverage IPStor's virtualization, key-based security, and IP connectivity to enable Conservor to deliver storage management services. Ripsnorter is Conservor's first complete IP "SAN-in-a-can" comprised of FalconStor software, a Conservor storage array, IBM servers, Extreme Networks Gigabit Ethernet switches and backup and tape management software from BakBone. This partnership also gave FalconStor access to the IBM mainframes in Conservor's solutions portfolio. Engineers from both companies collaborated to bring centralized storage, virtualization and the cost benefits of IP storage to Linux servers running on IBM mainframes, the companies said.

Tape at random rates
Overland Data Inc., San Diego, Calif., will license its Variable Rate Randomizer (VR2) technology to Irvine, Calif.-based Quantum Corp. Overland's VR2 technology will be integrated into future Quantum tape drive offerings. Overland's VR2 increases the capacity and throughput of linear tape formats, Overland said. The first successful implementation of Partial Response Maximum Likelihood (PRML) channel encoding technology on linear tape drive platforms, VR2 can increase native capacity and native data transfer rate performance of existing linear tape technologies by as much as 50 to 100% without requiring any changes in tape path design, recording heads and/or media, the company said.
