A new technology bundle from Mountain View, Calif.-headquartered Legato Systems Inc., a storage management software vendor, promises IBM Corp.'s DB2 and LTO Ultrium customers more options for automated data backup and recovery.

Legato NetWorker software and the accompanying NetWorker Modules will be shipped with selected IBM TotalStorage Ultrium LTO Tape Libraries and DB2 Universal Database (UDB).

The bundles will be available through IBM and Legato channel distributors, the companies said.

"This relationship between Legato and IBM is intended to provide customers with a range of data backup and recovery solutions that can be both quickly and confidently implemented," said Dr. Cheemin Bo-Linn, Director Marketing and Alliances Storage Systems Group, IBM.

Legato NetWorker centralizes, and automates backup and recovery operations across Unix, Windows, Linux and NetWare platforms. As a result, IBM Ultrium LTO and DB2 customers using Legato's NetWorker will have access to the data protection capabilities and management consistency needed most by heterogeneous enterprises in DAS, NAS, and SAN storage environments. Advanced indexing, high-speed parallelism, tape cloning, NDMP support, and dynamic tape drive sharing are among NetWorker advantages that help protect storage assets and minimize downtime.

David Hill, research director for the Boston, Mass.-based Aberdeen Group, said the offerings are beneficial to customers because they provide pre-tested, enterprise-class data protection software that leverages the performance of LTO technology.

Legato NetWorker Modules provide online protection and recovery for databases, messaging and ERP applications. These include IBM DB2, Informix, Lotus Notes, and SAP. Other complementary modules provide autochanger support, HSM and Archive functionality, and automated NDMP-based NAS protection capabilities.

Legato said the NetWorker software and Modules will be available to new and existing IBM customers in January 2002.

Pricing for the technology bundles was not available at press time.
