MTI Technology Corp., Anaheim, Calif., unveiled the latest additions to its Infinity line of tape libraries, the Infinity 1685 and 1695, offering MTI customers the highest density enterprise tape libraries on the market today, with over 500 TB of total capacity. The expanded capabilities of the Infinity 1685 and 1695 include support for multiple drive technologies like Super DLTtape, DLT 8000 and LTO Ultrium tape drives. The libraries feature connectivity options for SCSI, Fibre Channel, and mixed interface environments. Both libraries offer hot-swap, hot-plug tape drives, power modules and fans for online replacement as well as optional redundant AC power, power supplies and fans and both the Infinity 1685 and 1695 are equipped with Quantum|ATL's Prism Storage Architecture, which MTI said provides flexible options for upgrading to future technologies. The 1685 offers up to 16 tape drives and 679 cartridges, for up to 149T Bytes capacity and 1.7 TB/hour performance for under $65,000. The 1695 scales to 64 drives and 2,500 slots for more than 50 0T Bytes capacity with Super DLTtape drives, and more than 7 TB/hour performance with LTO Ultrium drives starting under $90,000., MTI said.

Boulder, Colo.-basedExabyte Corp.'s 430M tape library is now available with a native Fibre Channel interface, eliminating the need for an internal bridge or router, bypassing a single point of failure in network backups, Exabyte said. Accommodating 30 cartridges and four M2 tape drives, the 430M tape library provides capacities of up to 4.5T Bytes in 5u of rack space and data transfer rates of up to 432GB/hour in traditional SCSI implementations. The 430M is sold fully loaded with data cartridges, said Exabyte. The 430M library is available in both SCSI and FC interfaces. MSRP for the Fibre Channel interface starts at $26,000 and includes the tape library, 2 M2 tape drives, 30 data cartridges, fibre optic cabling, library monitoring software and barcode scanner.

Where can I get my DLT?
Tandberg Data ASA, Oslo, Norway, has extended its agreement with Quantum Corp.'s DLTtape Group to manufacture and sell DLTtape and Super DLTtape drives to distributors and OEMs headquartered in Europe, APAC and Japan. The companies said Quantum will focus efforts on marketing and selling DLTtape and Super DLTtape drives in North America and Latin America. The manufacturing and distribution agreement will take effect in the fourth quarter of 2001.

Gartner dubs Quantum the drown in tape volume
Quantum|ATL, a subsidiary of Quantum Corp., Irvine, Calif., was the leading unit volume producer of half-inch tape automation products in the DLTtape and LTO Ultrium drive categories for the year 2000, according to Gartner Dataquest research. Quantum|ATL offers DLTtape, LTO Ultrium and Sony AIT libraries, with scalability up to 64 drives and more than 2500 cartridges. According to the company, Quantum|ATL's Prism Storage Architecture provides a cost effective platform with connectivity options for SCSI based server attachments, Fibre Channel based SANs or Gigabit Ethernet NAS systems.

Overland's new library
Overland Data Inc., San Diego, Calif., introduced the newest member of its non-stop Neo series tape library, the LXN4000. The 10U-high LXN4000 supplies up to 24T Bytes of capacity, up to four drives and up to 52 media slots. When configured with four modules, each multi-module library system operates as a single virtual library, and may be provided with either DLT8000 or Super DLTtape drives for optimal compatibility, performance, and capacity up to 24T Bytes.
