PALM DESERT, Calif. -- BMC Software is offering up a new solution that helps users get the most out of their applications and storage devices.

Here at the Storage Networking World Conference Tuesday, BMC launched the Patrol Application Storage Resource Manager (ASRM), the final component of BMC's Application-Centric Storage Management solution, which identifies and correlates which storage assets support individual business applications. The goal of the Resource Manager is to extract specific application information and associate it with all of its related storage, down to where information is located on a particular disk.

"The ASRM tells you which applications are consuming data at what rate," said Bob Beauchamp, president and CEO, BMC Software.

Products weren't the only news coming out of BMC. To support the completion of the full ACSM solution, BMC has formed the ACSM Consortium Partner Program. The consortium is made up of vendors that will partner to test and integrate their systems with the Patrol products, according to BMC.

Brocade, Cisco Systems, Crossroads Systems, EMC, Gadzoox Networks, Hitachi Data Systems, Inrange, JNI, McData, Network Appliance, Nishan Systems, OTG Software and QLogic have all been named as members of the consortium. The partners will work with BMC to develop storage management solutions.

"We're delivering on the announcements made last October [at Storage Networking World in Orlando] like we said we would," said Beauchamp. "The ACSM is the partner consortium that helps BMC bring these products to market."

The full ACSM solution is made up of BMC's Knowledge Modules, Patrol Storage Network Manager, Patrol Storage Resource Manager and Patrol Application Storage Resource Manager.

Rounding out BMC's slew of storage announcements was the addition of four new Storage Knowledge Modules. Patrol for Brocade SilkWorm, conXsan, McData Directors and Patrol for Nishan IP Storage Switches, join the modules already in place for EMC's Symmetrix, Network Appliance Filers and Compaq StorageWorks, bringing the total number of Knowledge Modules to seven.

Knowledge Modules are the parts of BMC's Patrol solution that discover, capture, store and report physical attributes and event information for storage systems and storage network interconnect devices including disks, bridges, hubs, routers and host bus adapters (HBAs).

While the ASCM solution has a dedicated sales team that has been "immersed" in the technology, BMC said that the solution is also available through its regular worldwide sales force.

BMC said the next ACSM release will be in October of 2001.

"We're going to pour it on with storage," said Beauchamp.
